Il est l'une des figures majeures du courant hard bop et du soul jazz. Horace Silver est né le 2 septembre 1928 à Norwalk (Connecticut) aux États-Unis d'un père cap-verdien. Après avoir étudié le piano et le saxophone, il est engagé en 1950 par Stan Getz. C'est dans son orchestre qu'il s'affirme comme compositeur bebop.
