Edward Benjamin Britten est un compositeur, chef d'orchestre, altiste et pianiste britannique, né le 22 novembre 1913 à Lowestoft dans le Suffolk et mort le 4 décembre 1976 à Aldeburgh. Il est souvent considéré comme le plus grand compositeur britannique depuis Henry Purcell. Benjamin Britten est né le jour de la Sainte-Cécile, patronne des musiciens. Ses parents habitaient Lowestoft, un port de pêche d'Est-Anglie et leur maison faisait face à la mer du Nord.
