En 1968, il rencontra Coluche avec qui il fonda le Café de la Gare, tandis qu'il se séparait la même année de sa compagne Sotha qui épousera Patrick Dewaere (tous les deux faisaient également partie de la troupe).
Il est l'auteur de près de 30 pièces de théâtre.
Il vit actuellement dans la Beauce, après avoir passé trois ans à Marseille où est né son fils Shams, en 1997. Il est marié avec la comédienne Saïda Churchill, avec laquelle il vit depuis vingt ans.
