Considérée comme la première cogneuse de l'histoire de son sport, elle gagne Roland-Garros en 1990, à seulement seize ans et demi : un exploit inégalé sur la terre battue parisienne. En 1991, elle devient la plus jeune numéro un mondiale au classement WTA et, pendant deux ans, interrompt le long règne de sa rivale Steffi Graf.
