Extrêmement précoce (elle est l'une des plus jeunes joueuses avec Jennifer Capriati à atteindre une demi-finale de Roland Garros, à l'âge de 15 ans), elle remporte au total 27 titres en simple, dont un titre du Grand Chelem lors de l'US Open 1990 et deux Masters.
