Il commence le cyclisme en 1991 en faisant du VTT et devient professionnel en 1996 dans l'équipe Force Sud puis à Festina avant de rejoindre l'équipe cycliste La Française des Jeux en 1999.
Il est membre de l'équipe Festina (mais il n'est pas présent sur le Tour de France) lorsque le scandale éclate en juillet 1998, mais tous ses coéquipiers disent qu'avec Patrice Halgand et Laurent Lefèvre, il était l'un des trois seuls à ne pas user de produits dopants.
