Benoît Poelvoorde est né à Namur, le 22 septembre 1964. Fils (cadet, mais il a une petite sœur) d'une épicière et d'un routier (décédé alors qu'il était jeune) il fait ses études chez les jésuites puis à 17 ans, quitte le domicile familial pour suivre des cours d'arts appliqués. Il se passionne pour le théâtre et se fait remarquer grâce à ses interprétations atypiques. Destiné à une carrière de dessinateur, il pratique également une seconde activité : la photographie.
