Robert Selden Duvall naît le 5 janvier 1931 à San Diego en Californie. Son père, William Howard Duvall, est amiral dans la Navy. Il déménage à dix ans avec sa famille sur la côte Est, à Annapolis, dans le Maryland.

Il fait ses études au Principia College avant d'effectuer son service militaire en Corée pendant deux ans. Grâce au financement de ses études par le gouvernement américain, le G.I. Bill, il part en 1955 pour New York et entre au Neighborhood Playhouse Sch...
