Professionnel depuis 2002, Michele Scarponi avait été déclaré vainqueur du Tour d'Italie (« Giro ») en 2011, après la disqualification d'Alberto Contador. Professionnel à partir de 2002, qui a couru en 2011 pour l'équipe Lampre-ISD devenue Lampre-Merida en 2013. Il est ensuite membre de l'équipe Astana.
