Mary J. Blige est née le 11 juillet 1971, dans le quartier du Bronx, à New York. Elle se passionne très tôt pour le chant et intègre la chorale de l'église locale alors qu'elle sait à peine marcher ! Elle n'a qu'un but: faire de cette passion un métier.

Elle a tout juste vingt-et-un ans quand sort son premier album, What's The 411. Il lui vaut vite le qualificatif de "reine de la soul et du hip hop" puisque cet opus s'écoule à plus de trois millions d'exemplaires ! Très influencée par les grands maîtres du genre comme Stevie Wonder ou Gladys Knight, Mary décide toutefois de ne pas s'endormi...
