De son vrai nom Linda Evanstand, elle est repérée en accompagnant une amie à un casting pour une publicité par un agent artistique. À l'époque brune, petit à petit, elle débute à la télévision dans la série Bachelor Father avec John Forsythe (1960) et au cinéma dans Le Motel du crime avec Richard Chamberlain (1963), et commence par des petits rôles. Elle décida de se teindre en blonde, puis obtint le rôle d'Audra Barkley dans la série western (un genre qui colle à sa carrière) la grande vall...
