Ses origines (fils de l'écrivain et résistant lyonnais René Tavernier publiant clandestinement de grandes plumes tel Aragon), ses débuts dans le cinéma comme assistant de Jean-Pierre Melville (Léon Morin, prêtre), réalisateur de courts métrages et enfin attaché de presse et son travail d'historien du cinéma ont profondément influencé son style.

Comme critique cinématographique, il collabore dans les années 1960 à plusieurs revues : Les Cahiers du Cinéma, Cinéma, Positif, Présence du Ciném...
