Sidney Govou a grandi au Puy-en-Velay, avant d'entrer au centre de formation de l'Olympique lyonnais à dix-sept ans. Trois ans après, lancé par Bernard Lacombe, il débute en professionnel avec son club formateur, le 15 janvier 2000, contre Auxerre (défaite 2-0). Il se fait connaître du grand public en 2000-2001 avec la rencontre face au Bayern Munich en Ligue des champions où il marque deux buts...
