Bhumibol Adulyadej, né le 5 décembre 1927 et mort le 13 octobre 2016, couronné en 1950 sous le nom dynastique de Rama IX, est roi de Thaïlande de 1946 à 2016. Souverain constitutionnel, il est le chef de l'État et protecteur des religions de Thaïlande. À sa mort, il était le plus ancien chef d'État en exercice, étant resté sur le trône pendant 70 ans 4 mois et 4 jours. Fondée en 1782, la dynastie Chakri prit la succession des rois d'Ayutthaya défaits par les Birmans. Ce changement dynastique fut aussi l'occasion de la fondation de Bangkok comme capitale du royaume.
