Michael Fred Phelps, né le 30 juin 1985 à Baltimore (Maryland), est un nageur américain. Son écrasante domination lui vaut des surnoms tels que The Baltimore Bullet (« La Balle de Baltimore ») ou « Le Glouton du Michigan ».

En 2004, aux Jeux olympiques d'Athènes, il égale le record du nombre de médailles au cours de mêmes Jeux olympiques du gymnaste Alexander Dityatin : Phelps en remporte huit, dont six en or.
