Mary Ellen Mark, née le 20 mars 1940 à Philadelphie et morte le 25 mai 2015 à New York, est une photographe américaine connue surtout pour ses reportages au travers des États-Unis, dans lesquels les portraits occupent une place prépondérante. Mary Ellen Mark commence la photographie à 9 ans, puis s'intéresse au dessin et à la peinture lors de son passage au lycée, puis à l'université de Pennsylvanie. Elle travaille alors en tant que freelance dans les années 1960. Son diplôme en poche, elle obtient une bourse pour partir photographier en Turquie puis en Europe pendant un an.
