Il débute jeune dans une carrière musicale aux côtés de son frère Donnie Wahlberg, un des membres de New Kids on the Block avec Danny Wood, Jordan Knight et Jonathan Knight, dans un groupe original avant qu'il ne soit remplacé par Joe McIntyre. Il entame alors sous le pseudonyme de Marky Mark en tant que rappeur dans le groupe Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch (1991-1993).
