Qualifié d'« Ivo Karlović en puissance » par Andy Murray, son service est la plus grande arme de son jeu. Il est l'un des joueurs les plus grands du circuit (2m06, 111kg).

Lors du Tournoi de Wimbledon 2010, il a remporté le plus long match de l'histoire du tennis contre le Français Nicolas Mahut.
