Jean Dutourd nait à Paris, le 14 janvier 1920. Ayant perdu sa mère à l'âge de sept ans, il est mobilisé à vingt ans, et fait prisonnier au bout de quinze jours de guerre. Il s'évade six semaines plus tard, revient à Paris et passe une licence de philosophie à la Sorbonne. Licence incomplète, car il ne parvient jamais à décrocher le certificat de psychologie.
