Grand nom de l'histoire du football au poste de libéro, Beckenbauer signe sa domination au plus haut niveau international en remportant en tant que capitaine de l'équipe d'Allemagne de l'Ouest le Championnat d'Europe de 1972 et la Coupe du monde deux ans plus tard.
