Carl Friedrich Benz, plus connu sous le nom de Carl Benz, né le 25 novembre 1844 à Mühlburg (de nos jours partie de Karlsruhe) et mort le 4 avril 1929 à Ladenburg sur la Neckar, est considéré comme l'un des inventeurs de l'automobile.

Il fonda sa première société, de fournitures de matériaux de construction, en 1871. Il se maria l'année suivante avec Bertha Ringer dont il eut cinq enfants.

En 1883, à Mannheim, il commença à construire des moteurs industriels. Il en installa un, monocylindre, refroidi par eau, d'un litre de cylindrée pour 560 W, allumage électrique, soupape d'admission co...
