Benjamin Biolay naît le 20 janvier 1973 à Villefranche-sur-Saône, près de Lyon. Avec ses deux sœurs, il est élevé dans un univers musical. Son père est un clarinettiste amateur, membre actif de l'orchestre municipal. Benjamin a une formation très classique au conservatoire local, d'abord en matière de violon et de tuba. Parallèlement, il joue aussi dans l'orchestre symphonique municipal junior. A 15 ans, avec son cousin, il monte un petit Juliette Gréco...
