Aaliyah Dana Haughton voit le jour en le 16 janvier 1979, à New York. Elle passe cependant la majeure partie de son enfance dans une autre grande métropole américaine : Detroit, dans le Michigan. Dès son plus jeune âge, elle attrape le virus de la chanson: concours de chants, castings et shows se succèdent à un rythme soutenu.
