Après une licence de lettres et une maîtrise de droit, Patrice Carmouze a été journaliste et rédacteur en chef au Quotidien de Paris dans les années 1980 avant que les téléspectateurs ne le découvrent pour la première fois dans le Bloc-Note de Ciel, mon mardi !, aux côtés de Christophe Dechavanne, Renaud Rahard et Michel Field.
