Droitier, il possède un revers à deux mains, un physique atypique et un formidable jeu de jambes. Il a gagné lors de sa carrière trente-quatre titres dont un du Grand Chelem en 1989 (Roland-Garros) et sept Masters Series. Son meilleur classement ATP en simple a été la deuxième place mondiale, obtenue le 9 septembre 1996.
