Il débute sa carrière professionnelle en 1997.Il se révèle au tout premier plan grâce à son parcours à Roland-Garros 1998 où il écarte successivement le tenant du titre Gustavo Kuerten et le double finaliste et futur vainqueur 1999 André Agassi, avant de s'incliner en huitième de finale face à Cédric Pioline au cours d'un match en cinq sets.
