Une tombe consacrée à un soldat inconnu est une tradition qui provient de la Première Guerre mondiale et qui se retrouve dans plusieurs pays. Habituellement, la tombe contient les restes d'un soldat mort sans identification et dont le corps reste impossible à identifier. La première tombe du Soldat inconnu se retrouve à l'abbaye de Westminster, à Londres. Elle a été construite en 1920. La France a suivi la règle avec une tombe du Soldat inconnu sous l'Arc de Triomphe, datant de 1921 et honorant les morts de la Première Guerre mondiale....
