Il est accepté initialement à l'Académie de l'US Air Force pour devenir pilote de chasse puis étudie les sciences politiques au Massachusetts Institute of Technology, mais abandonne son cursus en 1969 après sa licence pour entamer une carrière d'acteur. Il obtient son premier rôle à la télévision dans un épisode de Kojak en 1974.
Dans les années 1980 il joue notamment dans Videodrome de David Cronenberg, Il était une fois en Amérique de Sergio Leone (il interprète Max, l'acolyte de Robert De Niro), Cop de James B. H...
