Bernardo Bertolucci est premier fils du poète Attilio Bertolucci et le frère de Giuseppe Bertolucci. Il commence à écrire dès l'âge de 15 ans et est récompensé pour son travail peu de temps après. Il reçoit notamment le Premio Viarregio. Il se rend ensuite à Rome pour ses études et devient l'assistant de Pier Paolo Pasolini sur Accattone .
