Les parents d'Alain Jakubowicz, venant de Pologne et d'Autriche, arrivent en France en 1933. Ils parviennent à échapper aux déportations durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Son père possède une manufacture de fabrication de fuseaux à Lyon.

Jusqu'à l'âge de 23 ans, il est engagé dans des « mouvements de jeunesse communautaires ».
