Après avoir grandi à San Diego, il quitte le lycée et comme il ne peut se lancer dans une carrière de surfeur professionnel, il part à Los Angeles afin d'y suivre ses études, quitte son ancien emploi au BlockBusters pour devenir acteur. Il emménage dans un minuscule appartement et il engage un professeur d'art dramatique privé ainsi qu'un agent pour se lancer dans la télévision.
