Antoine le Grand ou Antoine d'Égypte est considéré comme le fondateur de l'érémitisme chrétien. Sa vie nous est connue par le récit qu'en a fait saint Athanase vers 360. Il serait né en 251 et mort en 356, ce qui le fait vivre en tout cent cinq ans. Fête le 17 janvier. Né en Égypte à Qeman (Fayyoum) et fervent chrétien, dès l'âge de vingt ans il prend l'Évangile à la lettre et distribue tous ses biens aux pauvres, puis part vivre dans le désert en ermite dans un fortin à Pispir, près de Qeman. Là, à la manière du Christ, il subit les tentations du Diable; mais si pour le Christ cela ne dure...
