Alan Parker commence sa carrière professionnelle dans le monde de la publicité. À la fin des années 1960, alors qu'il travaille pour l'agence londonienne Collet Dickinson Pearce, il écrit ses premiers scénarios. Il réalise en 1974 deux courts-métrages, Our Cissy et Footsteps.
